Oswego Canal

The construction of the Oswego Canal was spurred by the Erie Canal’s early success. The waterway originally started in the heart of downtown Syracuse and currently begins in Brewerton. The canal played a significant role in the economic development of the region, facilitating the transportation of goods such as coal, lumber, and salt. The volume of shipping has been increasing in recent years, averaging about 80-120 vessels per year.

The Oswego Canal is the only route from the Atlantic/Hudson River system to Lake Ontario fully within the United States. It has been an important part of the state’s canal system and continues to be a popular destination for boaters and tourists. The canal’s rich history and scenic beauty make it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the history of New York’s canal system.

If you’re planning a trip to the Oswego Canal, be sure to check out the New York State Canal Corporation’s website for more information on the canal’s history, attractions, and events. Happy exploring!
